When I first enrolled at IGNOU, I assumed assignments were just another academic hurdle before exams. But as I started writing them, I realized they carry a far deeper significance. Each assignment felt like a quiet conversation with the subject—sometimes frustrating when I couldn’t find the right reference, sometimes satisfying when everything finally clicked together. Unlike exams that demand quick answers under pressure, assignments gave me the space to pause, reflect, and truly understand what I was studying. They also pushed me to plan my schedule better, dig into books I’d otherwise skip, and even discover my own style of writing.

Looking back, I can say with certainty that IGNOU assignments didn’t just test my knowledge—they shaped the way I learned and expressed myself as a student.
At the same time, I remember being confused about the rules and process of assignments when I started. So, I thought I’d share all the information I’ve gathered so far. Hopefully, this will save you some of the uncertainty I faced.

Basic Rules for IGNOU Assignments
  • Assignments must be handwritten (not typed or printed) on A4 sheets.
  • Leave adequate margins on all sides.
  • Number each page clearly.
  • 1st page of the assignment (Click here to download): It’s a standardized template that must be attached at the beginning. It includes: Your full name, Enrollment number, Programme code, Course code, Course title, Submission date, Signature, and other relevant details.
  • 2nd page of the assignment:  Attach a printout of your IGNOU ID card.
  • 3rd page of the assignment: Attach a printout of the Question paper.
  • 4th page onwards: Write the question & its answer in black or blue pen. Avoid using any other colored pen.
  • Remember to obtain a receipt from the Study Centre for the assignments submitted and retain it.
  • Keep a photocopy of the assignments with you.

After Submitting the Assignments
  • Once you’ve submitted your assignments, you don’t just stop there. You can (and should) check the assignment status through ignou.ac.in to confirm they’ve been received and evaluated.
  • After evaluation, the assignments have to be returned to you by the Study Centre. Please insist on this and keep a record with you. The marks obtained by you will be sent by the Centre to SED at IGNOU, New Delhi.

How to Check Assignment Marks

Assignment marks are updated online after exams. You can view them in your Grade Card once the Term-End Exam (TEE) results are declared. These marks are uploaded regularly on the IGNOU Grade Card Status portal, which you can access by logging into the IGNOU website.

Final Thoughts

For me, IGNOU assignments were not just about scoring marks—they became milestones of growth in the distance learning journey. They taught me discipline, time management, and above all, the habit of learning actively rather than passively. If you’re an IGNOU student, I’d say: don’t treat assignments as a burden. They’re actually one of the most valuable aspects of this unique learning experience.
